Alicia detainee dies; repair man killed

A detainee died of an apparent suicide while a shoe repairman was killed in Tagbilaran City last week. The suicide was identified as one Julius Quiros, 29, single and a resident of Barangay Putlongcam, Alicia town. Quiros was locked behind bars in connection with a murder case he is facing.. A report from the Alicia police station said Quiros' death was discovered about 7:45 am last Nov. 4. The victim's lifeless body was found hanging inside the comfort room of the lock-up jail Wednesday. According to the policemen on duty at the time, they noticed that Quiros was nowhere to be seen so they called out to him. There was no response, however, so they decided to enter the comfort room and found the victim hanging on a rope of straw. Quiros was accused of killing his uncle over an altercation when the former failed to turn over gambling winnings worth P60. The suspect tried to settle with the heirs of the victim but was rebuffed, leading to his despondency.

Meanwhile, a shoe repairman was found dead inside an abandoned boat which had been his home. The victim was identified as one Eric Melchor, 37, single and a native of Barangay Botoc, Loay town. Melchor had been living at the San Vicente, an abandoned boat moored below the old City Hall. The victim sustained stab wounds on his left breast and right portion of his neck which caused his instantaneous death. Melchor's death was reported to the Tagbilaran PNP by concerned residents about 6 am Wednesday. Investigators learned that on the night prior to his death, the victim was seen in the company of a slim long-haired man with whom he reportedly sniffed rugby. People living near the boat said that they heard an argument about 2 am and was followed by silence.

The victim, who earned a living repairing shoes at a stall near the old Provincial Library, was a former member of the notorious Ahos Gang. A post-mortem examination was conducted on the victim by Dr. Apollo John Bernaldez of the City Health Office before he was brought to the Holy Name Funeral Homes. Investigators are following up a lead on the identity of the suspect but declined to give additional details while the operations are going on.
