Non-stop rains in Jagna town trigger landslides

JAGNA.- Non-stop rains lasting more 24 hours last week  brought about by typhoon “Ramon” battered some parts of the province and triggered landslides in Jagna and other towns. The storm which slammed Bohol’s eastern board towns stranded passengers in the city airport and Bohol sea ports. Fishermen   in three different areas, who experienced a sea ordeal at the height of the typhoon, survived and drifted ashore and returned home safely, a Coast Guard unit based here reported. This came after PAG-ASA hoisted storm signal number two in Bohol and warned that the typhoon would hit the province early  Wednesday morning. Southern Leyte province  which is very proximate in northern and eastern parts of the province bore the brunt of Ramon. DepEd and other officials immediately suspended the classes of elementary and secondary levels including that of private schools on the same day the storm hit parts of Bohol. The provincial congress of the Liga ng mga Barangay (LnB) and the mayor’s meeting slated on that very day were also suspended due to the pending storm.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Tagbilaran city office confirmed that insignificant landslides in the towns of Jagnaand Sierra-Bullones town  occurred during the duration of the downpour. Alarm was also raised to the landslide and flooding prone areas in the towns of Valencia , Cortes , Inabanga and Loboc and other municipalities. The towns of Inabanga, Loboc, Cortes and Garcia-Hernandez are said to be vulnerable to floods because of the presence of big river catchments while Sierra-Bullones, Jagna, Cortes are landslide-prone areas.  In Jagna, barangay chairman Bonifacio Galorio, confirmed the landslides in his barangay Boctol in his text message to this writer. He said two landslides occurred here, one is about 300 meters from the border with barangay Mayana and another in purok 7, he said. But he did not say if there were casualties and damages. He added that the debris resulting from the landslides have cleared by the Department of Public Works and Highways yesterday morning. (Saturday). The DENR said it received reports that there was a landslide in the hinterland barangay of Garcia-Hernandez, an adjacent town here. The Coast Guard and police authorities disclosed the identities of the sea survivors.

They are Delfin Rivera, 48 and Ferdinand Claros,46, both of Oroquita City, Misamis Occidental, who were fishing at  Mindanao  sea but lost track on their way home and found themselves ashore in Loay town. In a check yesterday at Loay police station yesterday, the police said that the duo have already left town for Oroquita City. In Guindulman town, about 83 kms. from here, 13 fishermen returned home safely from fishing at the height of the storm after they drifted in Mambajao town, province of Camiguin, the Coast Guard said. They were identified as Benjie Bernaldez, Ericson Bernaldez, Nato Jugarap, Ineren Jugarap, Rogem Jugarap, Rogelio Amoro, and Crisboy Maglasang. In separate boat, fishers --- Roding    Meletares, Totsie Meletares, Bador Cabrera, Ragem Gomahin, Epong Militares and Poloys Lamyon, whose ages were not known based on CG’s record, were also rescued. nother group of 36 fishers of six separate fishing boats owned by    a certain Mauricio Tiongson of barangay Dao in this city returned home unharmed from fishing between Bohol and Cebu  sea on the night the storm that hit Bohol.
