Throwing good money after bad

He has no qualms admitting that he's a financier of the illegal numbers game ‘swertres'. In fact, a raid recently on his building along J. R. Borja St. yielded him an indictment for violation of Republic Act 9287 (Illegal Numbers Games) now pending before the city prosecutor's office. To some who know the ins and outs of illegal gambling, it was a dangerous precedent. But blame him not, it's a judgment call. His recent brush with illegal gambling is just one of the three cases he earned resulting from the raid. Another case slapped on him is illegal possession of firearms arising from the confiscation of several guns found in his residence following the raid. Of the three, he succeeded in freeing himself from the more serious crime of violation of the Comprehensive Drugs Law after the regional laboratory of the Philippine National Police found that what was seized in his possession did not contain the prohibited substance known as shabu. Believe it or not what was found in his possession was “tawas”, known in chemistry as potassium aluminum sulfate, instead of what was believed to be crystalline substance seized during the police operations.

The continuing saga of businessman Eduardo “Boy” Enerio as a slippery police character remains the stuff of fiction in the annals of crime busting. Not too long ago, he escaped imprisonment when a non-bailable offense of murder was reduced to homicide. Not a few eyebrows were raised how he run circles with the law and got away with murder. Boy Enerio may be largely misunderstood as a businessman but at least he is man enough to admit his own indiscretions. In the illegal gambling racket, no one in his right mind would admit he is into it. To him, it was enough that some of his cohorts botched to his pontifications that he had since stopped being one. Not too long, Boy Enerio enjoyed the role as self-styled ‘swertres' financier until his so-called “trusted coordinators” put one over him in the racket's daily take that he decided to call it quits. But not until losing as much as P700,000 apparently because he was too naïve to the ways of the rumble and tumble world of illegal gambling. Whether the money lost went to the wrong hands, or good money lost down the drain in the course of the illegal nature of the business no longer makes sense to Boy Enerio as he decided to cease operations after he learned quite lately that it was not profitable to continue after all.

His short-lived stint with the illegal numbers game made him realized that gambling was not his “cup of tea”. He changed course after seeing peso signs in an open space along J. S. Torralba St. this city. Sensing he is about to discover a virtual gold mine out of the open space, he convinced the lot owner to lease the area which he intended to convert into a flea market. After sinking almost a million to develop the open space, Boy Enerio earned the plaudits of city officials particularly City Mayor Baba Yap for having the initiative to lend a helping hand in solving the perennial problem of ambulant vending in this city. The proposed flea market is now in place with a sectionalized area for perishable goods on display. From fish, fruits and vegetables to barbecue stands, Enerio's wet market stands as a symbol of Boholano entrepreneurship. For Boy Enerio, it was a long way since being transformed into one who earned notoriety for having close calls with the law. As they say, the only thing permanent in this world is change. As to Boy Enerio's evolution from a shady character to legitimate businessman, one thing sure is that there's a lesson to be learned for having thrown good money after bad. The good money? His investment for a private wet market along J.S. Torralba St.
