Elections '07 or no-el: A good talking point

The military takeover in Thailand notwithstanding (it shattered the myth that there's no coup de etat in a parliamentary form of government), no one can surely say with certainty that there is going to be no elections in 2007. Neither that there is one. Whatever, lections or no-el, it is still a good talking point, nonetheless. The loud noise of no elections comes understandably from the last termers. The gall of these last term officials to advocate for no elections was best dramatized in their desire to lift term limits.

In the House of Representatives is where the groundswell of support to cancel elections in 2007 is heard loudest. Through House Resolution 1230, the congressmen especially those allied with Pres. Gloria Macapagal- Arroyo, made no pretense to hide their desire to scrap the 2007 elections. It is this House resolution that mandates the convening of Congress into a constituent assembly in order to revise the constitution. What else is this arrangement that is not being likened to congressional diabetics being consigned to a candy factory. This unconscionable resolution is not without its own backers from the ranks of last termers from local government units. For all you know, this is one bonus among local officials that it will extend their term of office without firing a shot. Who would disagree with this election bonanza?

On the part of elections advocates, there is no telling that majority of the people want elections to be held next in order to test the leadership issue of Pres. GMA whose legitimacy is still under close scrutiny. The majority of the people is being backstopped by the Senate whose existence is being threatened with abolition with the snowballing effect of the cha-cha initiative. Whether there is elections or no no-el, the decision depends on which part of the electorate's bread is buttered. For our part, whichever is good for the country, is where we are putting our sure bet.
